In 1999 Romfor established operations in Africa, sending its first drilling rig to the Republic of Congo. Within two years Romfor was also drilling in Gabon and Cameroon. In total Romfor built its African operation to eight drilling rigs with a total staff of 300. Of the eight rigs, seven were constructed/refurbished in Romfor’s own yard in Houston, Texas.

The African operations were largely staffed with experienced Romanian and South American staff. The company’s drilling performance in Africa was at the top of the industry as was its safety record. As little oilfield equipment was available locally, Romfor mobilized its own cranes and trucks to move its drilling rigs in record times. The French company, Caroil, bought the operations in 2008.
